Exam Skills

The goal of this section is to show ways in which people can improve their ability to take exams. Often, exams are very stressful for students, even if they’re proficient in the subject their being tested on, they still may fall short due to lack of test taking abilities. This ties in with studying and how effective you need to be when studying.

How to Prepare for Exams:

  • The best thing you can do is study. Know what type of learning style and studying methods work best for you.
  • Avoid distractions: The best thing to do it just put your phone away when studying. Not having it will keep you from wanting to go on it and zone out.
  • Don’t study for long periods of time: This can have a negative effect on people, as it’s difficult to keep concentration for long periods of time. Breaking up how often you study is better for managing time and will allow you to take in more information.

What to do leading up to exams

It’s ideal you do this 24 hours before taking your exam so you can consolidate all the final information you may need to know.

  • Create mind maps/do brain dumps
  • Try making your own possible test questions: Think about each topic in whatever subject you’re going to be tested on and try to think about potential questions that could be asked on the exam.
  • Don’t panic: If you still feel unprepared, there is still time to practice. Try remaining as calm as possible, this will allow you to take the actual test to your fullest capabilities.
  • Know where your exam is going to be held and double check the time of the test

Day of Exam

  • Stay calm Don’t get worked up over the exam, panicking will do you no good.
  • Know whatever happens, happens and that once it’s over you can change things

Reminders when taking exams

  • Read through the questions and instructions carefully: Don’t let not reading the instructions be the one mistake that prevents you from having a passing score.
  • Never leave a question blank: Even if you don’t know it, either pick a random answer or write something random. Your odds of getting it correct are slim but it’s better than getting zero points automatically for not answering.
  • Remember to stay calm: Take a few deep breaths and try your best to calm down your nerves before starting.
