Studying Skills

  • Everyone has their own approach to studying. The methods I’m going to list are not necessary for you to follow. They’re suggestions. If you really like a technique, use it, if you don’t ignore it.
  • Just know that to be successful at studying you need efficiency and actually have to put effort into learning and want to practice so you can do better
  • The biggest thing you should know is that reading is not studying. Just reading notes doesn’t help someone reinforce their knowledge, as it likely you’ll forget what you read right after.

Ways to Actively Study

  • Create a personal study guide for your subjects
  • Connect what you’re learning to your own life experiences: Try making real world examples from your personal experiences or things that you like. Such as sports, movies, video games, etc.
  • Turn yourself into the teacher: When you say information out loud and teach it to others, it not only helps other study, but reinforces knowledge of a subject. It may seem silly at first and if you have no one to talk to, just use inanimate objects or your pets (If you have any)
  • Brain dumps: This can be an effective method for some. You get a blank piece of paper and try to recall everything you remember from the subject you’re studying. Timing yourself is helpful when doing this. When finished, look back at your paper and compare it to your notes. See how accurate your memory was and try to fill in the gaps when necessary. After looking over your notes again, wait some time, like 10-15 minutes and repeat the same process of brain dumping.
  • Make potential test questions: An effective way of studying is by creating questions for each topic of the subject you’re going to be tested on. By doing this it will essentially allow you to know what will be on the test itself. There are so many things that can be asked and you thinking ahead will allow you to get a better understanding of those questions.

Important Things to Do When Studying

  • Try spacing out your study time: If you study for short periods of time everyday this will allow you to take in more material over time and will prevent you from burning out.
  • Studying intensively: Whenever you study and make time to do it, focus on studying. Intensely studying during short amounts of time can help you get more work done efficiently.
  • Know what environment you study best in: Some people may work better in silence, while others prefer noisy backgrounds
  • Avoid multitasking: Multitasking isn’t real (Incase you were unaware) but I’m using the word to explain that shifting between tasks when studying is NOT good to do.
  • Try changing settings once in a while: Switching up your study environment can be good to help you stay focused. For example, the library, a local coffee shop or your dining room.
  • Plan when to study: Make time to study, try not to put off studying, because not doing it won’t be beneficial and will be detrimental instead.
  • Use all resources available: Know what materials you have access to and use them to your advantage when studying
  • Avoid distractions: These can be problematic when it comes time to study. Not being able to focus directly on studying cause it to be less effective.
